The Ballad of Samson and Rosie
(Summer Russell)
Samson was as you'd expect him
Big and as strong as his name
Samson had claws to protect him
But Samson got caught all the same
Now he works under the big top
Always a draw for the crowd
And Samson sleeps under the moonlight
Brown eyes as sad as a clown's
Some chains, well they can be broken
Some rivers run to the sea
Some cages never get opened
Some people never get free
Rosie was as you'd expect her
Slender and fair as her name
Kind to the people who met her
But they called her a freak, all the same
Rosie, she works in the sideshow
Always a draw for the kids
She'd plucked it and pulled it and cursed it
Then just let the damn thing grow in
Some chains, well they can be broken
Some rivers run to the sea
Some cages never get opened
Some people never get free
Lester's the man with the long chain
Laughs when he jangles his keys
Samson will dance when he says so
Dance just as nice as you please
Lester says, Rose, you're my darling,
You belong right where you're at
And anyway, who else would have you?
He smiled when he said things like that.
Some chains, well they can be broken
Some rivers run to the sea
Some cages never get opened
Some people never get free
Some nights, the money just rolls in
Sometimes, the bleachers are filled
Some nights the man will get angry
And Rosie just tries to be still
And Samson he sleeps in the moonlight
While Rosie is hiding her face
She thinks of his scars and his dark eyes
And sees herself there in his place
One night, while Lester is passed out
She slips with his keys out the door
She knows that she'll pay in the morning
But Samson won't dance anymore
And as he goes lumbering over
The hills in the black of the night
Rosie will smile for a moment
And wait til he's gone out of sight
Tonight she will dream of a far place
With unfettered bears on parade
And Samson is king of the forest
And isn't she glad that she stayed?
