Summer Russell: Music

El Paso

(Summer Russell)

When you ride out from El Paso
The night has eyes of Spanish blue
And the way the desert heat won't fade
away
Reminds me just a bit of

The way I've held on to this for much too long
My dreams are painted hills,
A road sign and a box of still photography
and there's a white cross that fills the northern sky
On nights when I can't sleep
I think of it; I don't know why

And the memories fall wide to mark the miles
like wildflowers in the sand
But I know the low coyote's lullaby
And somewhere sleeping heart in hand
But now I've held on to this for much too long
My dreams are painted cliffs,
A night-owl and a song that drifts
Beneath a white cross that fills the northern sky
On nights when I can't sleep
I think of it; I don't know why

There were times I'd rest my eyes
along the road
And I saw the years that lay ahead;
I was young enough,
I thought it might not be
So I held on tighter as we slept, and I said

Catch me, catch me if you can
Cause I might drift away
And wake up in some other place
Where your face is lost inside the crowd,
But hold me if you can
Cause I don't want to go there now
And now I've held on to this for much too long
My dreams are painted stars
Above the road I left so far behind me

When you ride out from El Paso
The night has eyes of Spanish blue
And the way the desert heat won't fade away
Reminds me just a bit of you.
